A training visualisation built to make a mechanism legible.
Overview
Commissioned by the IDF as instructional material on the Ruger SR-22. Working alongside armament specialists, I modelled the weapon to specification in Autodesk Maya and rendered in Arnold, breaking the assembly into exploded views so each stage of the mechanism can be read on its own.
The challenge
Instructional visualisation has a different success condition to product work: it is not enough for it to look good, a trainee has to be able to understand the order of operations from the image alone. That means every component has to stay identifiable when it is separated from the assembly, and nothing important can be lost to a dramatic shadow.
The approach
I worked directly with personnel who use the weapon, which changed the framing more than once, the views that read clearly to an expert were not the ones that looked best. Lighting is deliberately even and neutral, closer to a technical plate than a hero render, and the exploded arrangement follows the actual disassembly sequence rather than a visually convenient one.
Exploded view
Components separated in disassembly order.

Views
Neutral, even lighting, a technical plate rather than a hero shot.

The result
A set of instructional renders covering the assembly, in exploded and complete states.
